Give us your “elevator pitch” (What you do, who you are, where you’re from).
I’m a recovering independent Congressional candidate from Milford, PA –– the hometown of Gifford Pinchot and the birthplace of the American conservation movement. I describe myself as a civic entrepreneur because my passion is combining the spirit of enterprise with the spirit of community to create positive change. My work has been focused on strengthening American democracy so that we can more effectively tackle the major challenges facing our country.
If you could spend one day with any famous person (past or present), who would it be?
I would spend a day with Teddy Roosevelt. He’s my favorite U.S. President because of both his personality and his politics. I would love to go on an outdoor adventure with him, perhaps in Africa, while discussing the issues of the day.
Do you feel college and post grad education is essential for success? Why or why not?
I’ve tried to follow Mark Twain’s advice by not letting school get in the way of my education. The best year of my undergraduate experience was the year I took a leave of absence from college to work on my first real campaign. While I have been well served by my education, which includes a Masters’ degree in American Government, I have benefited to an even greater extent from the practical experiences I gained interning and working in Washington while in school.
What’s your favorite book?
One of my favorite recent books is Charlie Wheelan’s Centrist Manifesto. It is a short, simple, yet compelling vision of how a new governing philosophy can bridge the partisan and ideological divide in Washington. It is a must-read for anyone who thinks we are stuck with just two choices in politics today.
What causes or organizations are your passionate about?
I believe our country is broke, both financially and politically. So I am most passionate about fiscal and political reform –– meaning, how do we get our government working again and our budget back in order. These are interrelated problems; our $18 trillion debt has been the cost of political dysfunction in Washington over the past several decades. We must act now to fix it because the longer we delay, the greater the price future generations will pay.
What’s your favorite quote?
"Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of." - Benjamin Franklin
Describe your dream vacation.
My dream vacation probably involves a pineapple, a lounge chair, and a beach in Thailand.
Where do you see yourself in 25 years?
I have no idea, but I hope to be in a place where I feel satisfied with the way I spent the previous 25 years and determined to at least live out a productive and impactful 25 more.
What’s currently on your radar? Tell us about your latest project
My latest project is called Run for America, which is led by another motivated millennial, David Burstein. RFA seeks to recruit, train, and elect a diverse slate of next generation leaders to Congress in 2016. I am leveraging my experience having run for U.S. House as the youngest candidate in 2014 to spearhead our candidate recruitment efforts and build the infrastructure to support these candidates in their campaigns. The bottom line is that if we are going to fix politics, we need the most courageous, visionary, and innovative leaders to run for office. Readers can nominate someone they know at www.Runfor.us.
Any advice for recent college grads?
My advice to recent college grads is don’t be afraid to ask for advice! So go find someone you admire and ask them to coffee. I’ve been fortunate to have several great mentors who helped me discover my passions and path in life because I did not hesitate to approach them in the first place.
