Give us your “elevator pitch” (What you do, who you are, where you’re from).
I’m Lyndsey Garza and I’m originally from San Antonio, TX. I graduated from the Missouri School of Journalism and landed a job in Austin, TX at Q1Media – where I am Publisher Account Executive. My role within Q1Media is to foster relationships with publishers, develop strategy on how to monetize their website and I also function in a bit of a business development role.
If you could spend one day with any famous person (past or present), who would it be?
If I could spend one day with any famous person, hands down, it would be Gandhi. I really try to embody his mantra and zen on a day-to-day basis, especially with clients. My favorite Gandhi-ism to live by is: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
(I’ve even gone so far as to put a bumper sticker of this quote on my car to encourage friendly, sometimes last minute, lane changes! On a serious note – seeing this quote everyday reminds me of how I’d like to approach and leave a lasting impression on everyone I encounter.)
Do you feel college and post grad education is essential for success? Why or why not?
I absolutely think college is essential for success for most people – but not everyone. If you have the opportunity to go to an incredible college (for me it was the University of Missouri), you can build a resume and network while still in school. Mizzou gave me the confidence to find my passion in my life and not be afraid to approach it head-on, despite being (arguably) young. The support I had from my mentors was unparalleled at the School of Journalism and I really don’t know if I’d be where I am today without those important relationships.
What’s your favorite book?
My favorite book is “Tao Te Ching” by Lao-Tzu. It is a brief book of 81 poems that imparts the idea of balance, perspective, generosity and compassion.
What causes or organizations are your passionate about?
I’m most passionate currently about the start-up and entrepreneurial world and cause. I cannot stop watching Shark Tank and possibly have over 50 unwatched episodes on my DVR. One day, I dream about owning a business and watching it grow from a seed to a huge sapling. I believe the entrepreneurial spirit is filled with passion, dedication and possibly even a little bit of insanity, too. You have to be a bit crazy to take big risks in life.
What’s your favorite quote?
The Gandhi quote from above – “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
Describe your dream vacation.
My dream vacation is being able to travel to Thailand and spend a month immersed in their culture. I’ve never been out of North America, and I hope this summer I’ll be able to fix that finally.
Where do you see yourself in 25 years?
In 25 years, I envision myself as a wife, mother, and a CEO. I also hope to be writing and developing more artistically. I hope at 49 I’m ridiculously happy – at the very least!
What’s currently on your radar? Tell us about your latest project.
My latest project has been developing my strategic sales and email marketing skillset. This is something I use on a daily basis in my job, and I constantly want to better myself. I constantly think of myself a work in progress and I’m always pushing myself to learn more, do more and perform higher.
Any advice for recent college grads?
There’s a lot to be said to recent college graduates, but I think what’s most important is to stay optimistic. The job market is tough, but you’re tougher. Learn how to brand yourself in a unique way, and transcend that idea across all mediums online – especially LinkedIn. Know who you are from that early moment, even if you don’t know your immediate future… This will take you far!
