When were you “bitten” by the entrepreneurial bug?
Looking back, the entrepreneurial bug bit me early in life. When I was really young around 8 or 9, I created a pretend TV show for my brother and I to star in where we sat in front of a window and acted like we were selling my Mom’s beauty products. In the 5th grade, I started a newspaper for my class at school that we produced weekly giving news and teachings about the world around us (and it was quite funny to read what a group of 5th graders had to say about the world). The following year in 6th grade, I organized a dance program for the younger kiddos at the daycare I was at.
This pattern hasn’t stopped from high school to college to my early 20s to now finding my deep love and passion of coaching. I love creating a project, organizing it and helping people. It is the ultimate excitement for me. However, those other projects never quite felt like it was “it” for me. Coaching has been my “it”! By combining my coaching passion with owning a business, it has been the BEST journey of all.
What’s been the hardest part about starting your own business as a millennial entrepreneur?
The hardest part for me has been pushback and negative view other generations has of me (especially when they don’t even know me). It’s that “I don’t get it” vibe or that “You’re just one of those crazy millennials.” It used to really frustrate me until I realized that that’s their own beliefs and that I shouldn’t hold myself back because of their lack of support or their negative attitude. The right people get my message and purpose. I get my message and purpose. That’s all that matters.
Now that I’m confident in myself and my own mission, I don’t see their pushback as hate; I see it as an opportunity to spread love. Now when I get pushback, it fuels up my passion of loving and accepting others even more so. (Which is why I love coaching so much….I get to spread love and acceptance! So this push back fuels my fire even more so for my biz!)
As an entrepreneur, it’s SO important that you see the opportunity in your challenges and don’t let others voices of you weigh you down. I used to see this as a challenge and now it’s a huge opportunity for me to live even more so in my passion and purpose.
What resources have you found helpful in blazing your own trail?
Online programs have been amazing for me and my biz. They are so easy to access in our busy world. They give amazing content and they have allowed me to flourish. The weekend or week long in person trainings have their time and place. However, doing programs online allowed me to learn at my own pace, in your own time and from people all over the world without having to stop everything else in your world to do it.
Who’s your entrepreneurial hero?
I have a lot of women who I look up to that are just a few years ahead of me in their businesses. They show me that that I can do it….that coaching can help a lot of people AND help me create the lifestyle I want to (and am!) creating. I just feel like they get it and get me. In world where so many people don’t get it, it’s been wonderful motivation to keep going because I see my bigger plan through them. These inspiring ladies are Marie Forleo, Ali Brown, Melanie Duncan, Amy Porterfield, Chalene Johnson & Nathalie Lussier just to name a few.
What advice do you have for today’s aspiring entrepreneurs?
My advice is that it’s very important to get clear on your blocks and what your strengths are. So many people want to follow their dreams and have an idea that’s awesome. Yet, so many people quit or fail because they aren’t clear on who they are or let their blocks get in the way.
They let the voice in their heads (who I like to call the Inner Mean Girl) come in and create criticism, doubt, fear, anger, etc and it keeps them small, confused and stuck. They make decisions based on those feelings instead of really trusting themselves and knowing who they are. Once you know your blocks so you can combat this inner negative voice and instead focus on what you are really amazing at, you are truly unstoppable!
