Give us your “elevator pitch” (What you do, who you are, where you’re from).
I’m Danny Rubin, the creator and writer of News To Live By, a blog for millennials which highlights the career advice “hidden” in the headlines. On the blog, I provide actionable, practical tips on communication, networking and leadership. I live in Virginia Beach.
If you could spend one day with any famous person (past or present), who would it be?
Thomas Jefferson. I would love to watch him work and interact with other Founding Fathers and as they build the foundation of America. Politics is so polarizing today, and I’m certain Jefferson and all the rest needed to compromise many times over to create our country.
Do you feel college and post grad education is essential for success? Why or why not?
If you want a white-collar job and to move into leadership roles, then yes you need some schooling and at minimum a four-year degree. Although I care more about your drive and work ethic than the school on your diploma. As for advanced degrees, if you can learn the skills in the real world and don’t need the additional education, save your money and have people teach you the business on the job. And don’t hide out in graduate school for lack of a better option.
What’s your favorite book?
The Color of Water by James McBride
What causes or organizations are your passionate about?
I am passionate about the Jewish community here in Virginia so I plan programs for the young professional crowd (ex: poker nights) to help people get to know each other and build stronger relationships.
What’s your favorite quote?
“Leave people better than you found them.” – Marvin J. Ashton .
It’s my senior quote in the high school yearbook and still my favorite quote today. I’m 31.
Describe your dream vacation.
Traveling in a new country. Not sitting on the beach day after day. I need to see and do.
Where do you see yourself in 25 years?
I want to be a seasoned communications professional who works with executives, teams and companies to sharpen their messages and use words to make an impact and drive change.
What’s currently on your radar? Tell us about your latest project.
I am working on a book that coalesces many of the ideas on my blog since I began the site in July 2012. It will be the most practical guide for networkers and job seekers you’ll ever find – that much I’m sure of.
I’m excited about the book and its potential. Stay tuned for a big announcement over the summer!
Any advice for recent college grads?
Do not expect to find your “perfect” job or career right out of the gate. And don’t overthink the opportunities that come your way. Take what’s given, work like hell on everything (even the crappy stuff) and you will slowly begin to understand the work you’re meant to do. The harder you push yourself, the faster you’ll discover your purpose.
