Give us your “elevator pitch” (What you do, who you are, where you’re from).
I’m Becky Kinkead hailing from Philadelphia! I’m a logo + brand identity designer for entrepreneurs who want to attract more of their dream clients.
Who’s your hero?
How can I not say my momma?! I know she gave me my entrepreneurial spirit, she’s a busy woman and I don’t know how she balances it all so well - but she does!
When feeling stressed or overwhelmed, what do you do to unwind and refocus?
I think knowing WHAT causes stress + overwhelm helps the refocusing process. For me, that’s clutter. Desk clutter, inbox clutter, too many tabs, too many to-do lists.
I try to stay organized and keep my to-do lists realistic. But if I’m feeling really overwhelmed I give myself an hour or two away from the computer to read, catch up on a tv-show, walk my dog- whatever! Just getting time away really helps.
What’s your favorite book?
Hard to choose! I like to read a lot of dystopian fiction (think Hunger Games). My favorite business books are “Burn Your Portfolio” by Michael Janda and #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso. Both are filled with practical + motivational advice to grow your biz.
Describe the biggest risk you’ve ever taken. How did it work out?
Probably when I quit my job to pursue full time freelancing- I remember I was shaking so bad! But even though I was nervous out of my mind, everything worked out! My best tip before quitting, save money so you have peace of mind, pick a date and then just do it.
What’s your favorite quote?
“Never let your fear decide your fate” -AWOLNATION lyric. It is literally my mantra for EVERYTHING. It can be really intimidating putting yourself out there and sharing your work, but say this quote to yourself over and over again and it becomes easier and exciting!
Describe your dream vacation.
Recently, I’ve been craving a really outdoors-y trip. (Probably because it’s been so cold and I’m stuck inside). Anything that would involve: hiking, camping, and lots of smores.
Where do you see yourself in 25 years?
I would like to still be designing + working on meaningful projects, traveling and helping young designers achieve their goals. (Especially knowing that having a mentor is so helpful when you’re starting out!)
What’s currently on your radar? Tell us about your latest project.
Well, I continue to work with entrepreneurs who are passionate about their businesses and helping their people- which is seriously the BEST. I also re-opened the doors to my course for budding designers and DIYers.
Any advice for recent college grads?
It’s true what they say, you can find work that you love and are passionate about… but don’t be afraid or get down on yourself if it takes time! When I graduated, I had a nannying position for a couple of months until I was able to get a design job that was perfect + the catalyst to my freelancing career.
