Fast forward five years.
I blog almost daily – from my personal blog to client’s blogs to national media blogs, blogging has become a major component of my daily life, and arguably, a total game changer for my career.
Today, I love blogging, and I think you will too, so here’s my stab at four reasons you should stop everything you’re doing right now and start your very own blog:
Allows you to share your story.
We all have a story – each and every one of us.
Whether you were raised in the sweet potato fields of Vardaman, Mississippi, or spent your 50’s whipping Congress to pass landmine-like bills, you have a story and it’s worth sharing.
Olympic athlete and inspirational speaker, Janine Shepherd stated, “When we share our stories, what it does is, it opens up our hearts for other people to share their stories. And it gives us the sense that we are not alone on this journey.”
Janine has a story, I have a story, and you have a story.
Our stories are not meant to be stuffed in the back of the closet like last season’s clothes; they should be shared – shared for me, and shared for you. It’s by sharing our stories that we’re able to empower others and ourselves towards a living a better life.
Blogging allows you a share your story – with the whole wide world – with just a few clicks of a button.
Connect with other cool peeps.
No one likes to be alone, especially in the Technological Age. While many of us spend the majority of our waking hours staring at a computer screen, virtually “collaborating” with others through e-mail and Slack, we are anything but “connected” in our high-tech world.
Blogging lets you connect with like-minds and searching souls 24/7.
Maybe it’s a fellow mompreneur in DFW area juggling soccer games and Etsy sales from her cluttered minivan that reads your “10 Tricks to Not Lose Your Mind During Teething” post and messages you to schedule coffee.
Or maybe it’s a fellow industry influencer that comes across your “4 Strategies for Landing a Job Offer Through Twitter” that wants to Skype chat about possible collaboration and meet-ups and upcoming conferences.
Bingo – blogging grew your network!
Land ah-mazing contributor ops.
First rule I learned when trying to hock my first book with sort-known-somewhere-in-the-midwest-publishing-houses: No one wants to publish something written by a “nobody”.
Tired of sifting through rejection letters? Ready to make that Forbes column a reality? Blog!
From Hugh Howey to James Altucher, today’s smartest authors are self-publishing their ways to bestsellers, thanks to their blog audience.
Blogging allows you to build a following, grow an online community, and leverage your digital “assets” in a way that can kick down the “No ‘Nobody’s’ Allowed in Here” doors and land your work in some serious publications.
Huffington Post, Women’s Health, Tiny Buddha – all very real possibilities for the modern blogger.
It challenges you in so many ways.
Want become a better writer?
Want to develop mad logic skills that would make Aristotle proud?
Want to land a keynote invite to address an audience of 400+ about a topic you’re fearlessly passionate about?
Think of blogging as the digital mama hen that squeaks and squawks about all your awesomeness and unparalleled expertise to all the world wide web.
The many doors blogging can open will involve opening yourself up to growth opportunities like you’ve never experienced. The challenges will stretch you, like the young sapling seeking more sunshine with every inch of growth its trunk reaches. Through blogging, you’ll become a better writer, a sharper thinker, and maybe even an award winning speaker, receiving standing ovations everywhere you go.
Let blogging challenge you, and like the sapling, rise to the occasion.
